How to Test Whether Your Business Backup Can Restore

Backup software can report success while the wrong folders are selected, credentials have expired, a destination is full or the files you care about were never included.

backup restore test small business

Backup software can report success while the wrong folders are selected, credentials have expired, a destination is full or the files you care about were never included.

1. Choose representative files

Test documents from several important business folders, not only one easy file.

2. Restore to a different location

Do not overwrite the original during a test. Restore copies to a temporary folder and open them.

3. Check recent dates

Confirm the backup contains recent work rather than an old snapshot that has silently stopped updating.

4. Check application data

Accounting, databases and line-of-business software may store data outside ordinary Documents folders.

5. Record the result

Write down when the restore was tested, what was restored and any failures that need correction.
