BitLocker recovery key business planning
Disk encryption protects business data, but it can also block legitimate recovery work if nobody can locate the recovery key.
1. Know which computers are encrypted
Do not wait for a boot failure to discover that BitLocker is active.
2. Record where keys are held
The correct place varies by setup: Microsoft account, organisational account, documentation or other authorised storage.
3. Do not publish or email keys casually
Treat recovery keys as sensitive credentials.
4. Check before hardware or firmware changes
Some BIOS, motherboard, TPM or boot changes can trigger recovery requirements.
5. Separate key recovery from data recovery
Without the authorised key, encrypted data may remain inaccessible even when the storage device itself is healthy.
