staff computer migration new pc office
The hard part of replacing an office PC is not copying Documents. It is recreating the employee’s working environment without discovering missing files or licences after the old computer has been wiped.
1. Inventory before touching the old PC
List applications, printers, network shares, email accounts, browser requirements, local files and special hardware.
2. Separate local data from cloud data
OneDrive or another sync service can make data appear local when it is actually online-only. Verify what exists before migration.
3. Confirm licences and logins
Line-of-business software may need deactivation, licence transfer or vendor assistance.
4. Build and update the new PC first
Install Windows updates, drivers and core applications before moving the user.
5. Verify normal work
Have the staff member test the actual tasks they do: email, printing, shared files, accounting, scanning and special software.
6. Keep the old PC intact temporarily
Where practical, do not erase the old computer immediately. It is the easiest source for forgotten files and settings.
